Is there an age limit?
You must be college junior level and above to participate. Waivers can be granted on a case-by-case basis.
What will this weekend accomplish?
We hope that this weekend will be inspiring for participants and spark conversations around the specific challenges and more broadly, how the innovation and big data community can tackle problems in health equity, eliminating disparities, and working with the social determinants of health to solve problems.
What if I can only attend a part of the event?
It is crucial for attendees to participant across the entire event because your teammates will be counting on you. If you have any conflicts, let us know in advance and we can try to work out a solution.
Do I have to be a data scientist to come to the event?
Not at all! We welcome everyone at all skill levels. The problems we are tackling this weekend are not just data science challenges. UX designers, entrepreneurs, academics, artists, poets, students, subject matter experts, engineers, and hackers of all levels are encouraged to participate.
What if I’m new to the field or don’t have enough experience?
We have designed each challenge to be inclusive and open to all skill sets, so don’t let this hold you back!
Do I need to do anything before the event?
You need to register. If you are coming from out of town and would like to book a hotel room, but we are located in downtown Houston so you may want to consider the Crowne Plaza River Oaks the Extended Stay America, or other downtown hotels. As we approach the date of the event, there will be additional resources made available for you. Once you register, we will send you an email if there are any updates.
Will I need to bring a laptop or other hardware?
Yes! Our challenges require you to have a computer of your own to develop code, algorithms. Additionally, you will likely need admin rights on your laptop if you want to install some of the open-source software tools suggested in the read-ahead material, which will be disseminated prior to the challenge.
Do I need to come with a team already formed?
Not at all, we have set a time aside in the schedule for you to meet other participants and form teams. However, you are welcome to come to the event with pre-formed teams.
Will there be a capsize on teams?
The ideal team size is between 3-6 people.
Who are the judges and mentors?
Judges and mentors are comprised of subject matter experts drawn from across related fields. We will have experts from academia, government, industry, UX design, data visualization and other areas. They will be onsite to provide guidance to teams throughout the weekend.
Where is the event being held?
The main event will be held November 8-10 at United Way of Greater Houston, 50 Waugh Drive, Houston, Texas 77007.
I’m from out of town, do you provide lodging?
We do not provide housing, but we do provide lunch and dinner and snacks for the event. If you are coming from out of town and would like to book a hotel room, but we are located in downtown Houston, so you may want to consider the TBD is located, the , or other downtown hotels.
