Dr. Susan Hutfless is an assistant professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She holds a joint appointment in epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She earned her Ph.D. in epidemiology from the Bloomberg School of Public Health and her S.M. in epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health. She also holds a B.A. from Creighton University.
Dr. Hutfless is an epidemiologist specializing in the use of big data in the healthcare system. She has published work using health data from numerous sources including Medicare, Kaiser Permanente Northern California, the Department of Defense, the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project and independent healthcare facilities. She believes that the rapid expansion in health-related data has the potential not only to retrospectively evaluate the quality of care, but to prospectively identify potential lapses in quality to contain them rapidly and effectively.
